Most small business websites are losing enquiries every single day — not because of bad SEO or lack of traffic, but because of small, fixable things that stop visitors from taking action. I audit websites regularly as part of my Digital Health Check service, and the same issues come up again and again.
Here are seven fixes that cost nothing to implement but make a measurable difference to how many people actually get in touch.
Add a tap-to-call button on mobile
This is the single most common fix I make. If someone finds your business on their phone and wants to call you, they should be able to do it in one tap. Not copy your number. Not type it manually. One tap.
The fix is simple — make your phone number a link: 07XXX XXXXXX. On mobile, this opens the dialler instantly. It takes five minutes to add and can meaningfully increase call volume overnight.
While you're at it, make sure your number is visible in the header or hero section — not buried in the footer.
Put your call to action above the fold
"Above the fold" means the part of the page visible before you scroll. Most visitors decide within a few seconds whether to stay or leave. If they have to scroll to find out how to contact you, many won't bother.
Your homepage hero should have a clear CTA button that does one of three things: links to your contact page, opens a booking form, or starts a WhatsApp chat. One clear action, easy to find, impossible to miss.
"Confused visitors don't enquire. They leave."
Shorten your contact form
Every extra field in a contact form reduces the number of people who complete it. Research consistently shows that forms with fewer than five fields convert significantly better than those with ten or more.
Ask yourself: do I really need their company name, address, and project timeline before I've even spoken to them? Probably not. Name, email, and what they're looking for is enough to start a conversation. You can collect the rest in the call.
Fix your mobile load speed
Over 60% of website visits happen on mobile, and Google uses mobile load speed as a ranking factor. If your site takes more than three seconds to load on a phone, you're losing visitors before they've read a word.
Common culprits: large uncompressed images, too many third-party scripts (chat widgets, analytics, fonts), and video backgrounds. Use Google PageSpeed Insights to check your score and see exactly what to fix.
Add social proof near your CTA
People make decisions based on what other people think. A testimonial, a review count, or even a simple "Trusted by 50+ businesses across the UK" placed close to your main CTA button significantly increases the likelihood of someone clicking it.
If you have Google reviews, display a widget showing your star rating and review count. If you have client testimonials, put at least one on the homepage where people can see it before they have to scroll.
Make your services page earn its place
Most services pages describe what you do. The ones that convert describe what the client gets. There's a big difference between "We provide web design services" and "A website that converts visitors into enquiries — built around your clients and how they search."
For each service you offer, lead with the outcome, not the process. What problem does this solve? What does the client's life look like after working with you? Then describe how you deliver it.
Set up an automatic acknowledgement email
When someone fills in your contact form, they immediately wonder: did that actually send? An instant acknowledgement email that confirms you've received their message removes that uncertainty and sets a professional tone before you've even replied.
It doesn't need to be long. "Thanks for getting in touch — I've received your message and will be back to you within [X hours/days]" is enough. You can automate this in about 20 minutes using Make or Zapier connected to your form.
Quick audit: Open your own website on your phone right now. Can you find how to contact you within 10 seconds? Is there a tap-to-call button? Does the page load in under 3 seconds? If any of these fail the test for you, they'll fail for potential clients too.
Where to start
If all of this feels overwhelming, start with Fix 1 (tap-to-call) and Fix 2 (CTA above the fold) this week. Those two changes alone can make a noticeable difference with minimal effort.
If you want a proper, thorough look at what's costing your website enquiries — with a prioritised action plan at the end — that's exactly what the Digital Health Check is designed for.
